A 37-year-old man was fatally crushed under one tonne of steel coils in Pointe-Claire in what Montreal police describe as a workplace accident.

The incident took place at around 2:20 p.m. Thursday, when a 911 call reported a man trapped under materials in a metal factory located on Hymus Blvd. near des Sources Blvd. Firefighters arrived first at the scene to try and remove him from under the pile of steel, followed by Urgence-santé paramedics and police.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

“There is every reason to believe that this was not a criminal incident, but an accident,” said police spokesperson Véronique Dubuc. Police officers were on site as of 6 p.m. Thursday to confirm whether any criminal negligence was at play, Dubuc said.

An investigation is underway by the Commission des normes, de l’équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail (CNESST).

The metal factory is reportedly run by Diversified Ulbrich, a stainless steel distributor. The Gazette tried to reach Diversified Ulbrich but did not receive an immediate response.
